Pre-Conference Workshop
Centering and Re-Centering:
New Beginnings for Writing Centers
in Challenging Times
Designed as a gathering for administrators
and staff of either new writing centers or centers seeking renewal,
this workshop will focus on resources.
Participants will explore strategies
for designing assessment, pedagogy, research, and networking.
Our explicit goals are to help writing center administrators and
staff explain the importance of their work and find the financial
resources needed to keep that work vital.
Workshop sessions will address the following
challenges:
| Assessment |
How do we define the kinds of help and roles
a writing center can and should provide to students and teachers?
How do we assess the effectiveness of a
writing center?
How do we use our assessments to argue
for a center's importance and cost-effectiveness |
| Writing Center Pedagogy |
How do we support tutors' professional development?
How do we transform understandings of writing among tutors,
clients, administrators, and faculty? |
| Research |
How can we learn from the successes and challenges
of other writing centers to best address the needs of writers?
How do we gather resources to understand the effects of
digital culture on writing and writers' needs? How do we gather
resources to address these needs?
How do we use data from the national scene to argue for
our own best working conditions, resource needs, and visions
for the possibilities of writing in the university or college?
|
| Networking |
How do we reach out and ally with colleagues, with constituents,
with administrators, with funding sources? |
